Gonorrhea resistance: why swapping antibiotics is unsafe

An antibiotic that helped someone previously is not automatically suitable for a new infection. Gonorrhea has developed resistance to several antibiotics, which makes accurate diagnosis and clinician-selected care important. Resistance is about the bacteria, not a person becoming “immune” to medicine, and it cannot be diagnosed from how quickly pain improves.

Avoid symptom-based antibiotic shopping

Discharge and burning have several possible causes, including infections with different treatment needs. A medicine may reduce symptoms without resolving the relevant infection. Do not select a drug from a forum, use leftovers or split a course with a partner. Tell the clinician what you have already taken and when.

Ask whether a culture has a specific purpose

A NAAT can detect gonorrhea, but it does not routinely provide the same antibiotic-susceptibility information as a culture. If treatment failure or resistance is suspected, the clinician may need a culture and specialist input. That does not mean every person needs every test; ask what clinical question the specimen will answer.

Report a persistent problem rather than escalating drugs

If symptoms remain or return, contact the treating team with the course details, missed doses and any new sexual contact. Persistent symptoms can have several explanations, including reinfection or another condition, not only resistance. Do not add stronger or multiple antibiotics to test a theory; this can complicate assessment and cause harm.

Protect the follow-up pathway

Take treatment exactly as directed and ask about sexual-contact precautions, partner care and repeat testing. If cost, access or side effects threaten completion, tell the service early. Do not save part of a prescription for a future episode or share it. A documented follow-up plan is more useful than an unused emergency antibiotic stash.

Common questions

Does resistance mean my body rejects every antibiotic?

No. Resistance refers to bacteria being less susceptible to a medicine; it is not a blanket property of your body.

Can persistent burning prove resistant gonorrhea?

No. Several explanations are possible and need clinical review rather than self-selected antibiotics.

Does every gonorrhea NAAT show antibiotic susceptibility?

No. Ask whether a culture or other investigation is needed for the specific treatment question.

Enquire about the next steps and availability. An enquiry does not confirm a booking or diagnosis and is not an emergency service.
