Practical questions

Missed STI medicine or vomiting: ask before redosing

A missed dose or vomiting after medicine can leave you unsure whether treatment is still on track. There is no universal redosing rule for every STI medicine. The safe next step is to check the medicine-specific instructions and contact the prescriber or pharmacist with the exact details, rather than taking an extra tablet just in case.

Have the exact medicine information ready

Keep the medicine name, formulation and prescribed instructions available. Note the time a dose was due or taken, when vomiting occurred and whether more than one dose was affected. Do not guess from tablet colour. Mention other medicines and any difficulty eating, drinking or keeping treatment down so advice can fit the situation.

Do not double or restart by yourself

For a missed antibiotic dose, the patient leaflet and pharmacist can guide the correct action. Taking two doses close together may increase side effects. Do not improvise a new course, share a partner’s tablets or extend treatment to compensate. If advice is unclear, ask for the next step in writing.

Report repeated vomiting or concerning reactions

Repeated vomiting, dehydration or severe symptoms need prompt medical advice. Difficulty breathing, swelling of the face or throat, or a severe blistering rash needs emergency care rather than a routine dose question. Do not assume every new symptom is a harmless treatment effect; explain its severity and timing.

Ask whether the follow-up plan changes

Tell the treating team about the interruption even if you now feel well. Ask whether it affects review, any test of cure or advice about sexual contact. Symptoms improving does not establish that the course was adequate. Keep the agreed plan and seek help early if practical barriers make further missed doses likely.

Common questions

Should I automatically repeat a dose after vomiting?

No. Advice depends on the medicine and timing. Contact the prescriber or pharmacist before redosing.

Can I double the next dose after forgetting one?

Do not double on your own. Follow the medicine-specific leaflet and obtain professional advice if unsure.

Does feeling better mean the interruption no longer matters?

No. Inform the treating team so they can assess whether treatment or follow-up advice needs adjustment.
